Haines, Oregon

Rock Creek is one of the earliest cemeteries in Baker County. It is located six miles west of Haines at the foot of the Elkhorn Mountain Range near what was once the small, thriving town of Rock Creek, Oregon..

The original cemetery was started around 1862 on a 2.5 acre site set aside by the Hearing family. The land was actively used for this purpose until 1895. Because of high groundwater from flood irrigating practices, a new cemetery site was selected a mile north of Haines.

The town of Rock Creek began its decline in 1885 when a railhead was established in Haines. As road transportation improved in the early 20th century, Haines achieved dominance as the local commercial center. A devastating flood in 1917 destroyed most of downtown Rock Creek. The town was never rebuilt.

The Rock Creek Cemetery also suffered a decline. It was used infrequently after 1895. Many bodies were exhumed and moved to the new Haines Cemetery. In later years, a caretaker accidentally destroyed most of the old wooden markers when he was burning off dead grass. Only the granite markers remained. Local residents were able to locate some of the remaining pioneer grave sites and remark them.

Since the formation of the Haines Cemetery District in 1969, many improvements have been made at the Rock Creek Cemetery. The grounds have been landscaped, fences repaired and roads installed. New signs are in place and a maintenance building has been constructed. An aerial and ground survey was completed to renumber the cemetery plots.

The restored cemetery is no longer threatened by floods and is again being actively used as a final resting place. The cemetery is open to the public. The Haines Cemetery District plans to set aside a small park area for visitors.

Following is the current list of known burial sites at the Rock Creek Cemetery. The Haines Cemetery District welcomes additional historic information regarding the listed individuals and their families. The Cemetery District may be contacted by writing to:
