2009 Parade Queen

Evelyne Fisher

Each year the Friends of Haines bestow the honor of Parade Queen on an outstanding community member who has participated in volunteer activities in the Haines Community over the years. Our 2009 Parade Queen is Evelyne Fisher.

Evelyne was born to Ralph and Rose Pembrook Stephens in Mitchell, Oregon in 1932. She grew up in Twickenham, Oregon and attended school in a one room schoolhouse with seven other students.

Evelyne and her family moved to Baker Valley in 1941. She graduated from Powder Valley High School in 1949 and took classes at Eastern Oregon College.

Evelyne's artistic talent surfaced at a young age. She loved to sketch and draw and received encouragement from her mother. When her children were grown up, Evelyne resumed working in watercolors. She has competed in many shows and won the Grumbaker Award in Watercolors and her artwork has been accepted for traveling shows for Art in Agriculture. She also is an accomplished doll maker. Raggedy Ann and Andy Dolls are her favorites. She also makes Potpourri dolls.

She met her husband, Elbert, when he moved to Haines following World War II. They were married in 1952 and lived in the Mt. Carmel, Rock Creek and Muddy Creek areas in Baker Valley. They have lived in Haines for the past 31 year. Evelyne and Elbert have four children: Jane Edwards of Aberdeen, Washington, Susan Fisher-Alexander of Pendleton, Oregon, Joe Fisher of Medford, Oregon, and Laura Wallace of Las Vegas, Nevada. They have six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. The values that Evelyne would like to pass down to her family are to stay the course, be consistent, be honest, love God and live the best life that you can. Be involved and contribute to your world. Her life and work in the Haines community has set wonderful example for them.

Evelyne has been an active member in the Mutual Improvement Club for 50 years. She was involved in many school functions and the PTA when her children were in school and has volunteered for the SMART Reading Program at the Haines Elementary School. She is a member of the Haines Baptist Church and is treasurer of the Haines Baptist Ladies Aid.

Haines has been the very fortunate of recipient of Evelyne Fisher's many years of community service. Please join us in honoring her on our nation's Independence Day at the Haines parade on July 4th 2009.
